A car accident killed two men from Queens and injured four other people on Interstate 684.

The six people were on their way to play paintball in Patterson when the rear left tire on their vehicle blew out causing them to swerve into the shoulder before flipping and rolling several times. The car came to a rest in the middle of the right lanes.

Two of the passengers were thrown from the car, both of them were killed in the accident. Another passenger was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. One other passenger was taken to the hospital with head trauma and two others were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Driving with dogs proves distracting and dangerous

Posted on August 18th, 2010 No Comments

Results from a survey by AAA auto club, show that 60 percent of dog owners have driven with their dog or dogs in their vehicle and been distracted.  Only 17 percent, or about one in six, say they have used animal restraints when they bring their dog in the car.

Driving with a dog can be an unintended distraction to the driver and unfortunately, can often result in crashes injuring the driver, passengers, animal, and other drivers or passengers.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals suggests that drivers who need to drive with their dog in the car use animal restraints.  Animals moving around throughout the car or even worse, into the driver’s lap, can be very distracting and potentially dangerous.

New law requires drunk drivers to install ignition interlock device

Posted on July 28th, 2010 No Comments

On August 15th, a new law will go into effect in New York requiring convicted drunk drivers to install ignition interlock devices in their vehicles.  New York will be the 10th state in the country to require the devices be installed in all convicted drunk drivers’ vehicles.  Approximately 25,000 people in the state of New York are convicted of driving under the influence a year.

Ignition interlock breathalyzer devices test a driver’s blood alcohol content before starting the car.  In order for the vehicle to start, the driver must register a BAC below .025 percent.  If a driver is tested and found to have over the legal limit of .08 they will face criminal charges.  Furthermore, convicted drunk drivers will also be required to report to a specified location once a month to have the results of their tests analyzed.

Suit filed by woman against city and police officer for injuries

Posted on May 7th, 2010 No Comments

Early this week a Staten Island woman filed a lawsuit against the city and a police officer she accused of running a red light and striking her car, seriously injuring her neck.

Court documents state that the woman was driving to work around 9 a.m. on January 29 when she attempted to take a left turn from Richmond Avenue onto Signs Road using a green turning light. The papers allege that the police officer ran a red light on Richmond Avenue while traveling towards the Staten Island mall and then struck the woman’s 2003 Hyundai.

While the woman claims to have suffered extensive neck injuries, she also admits to not having seen a physician about them. The damages she is seeking are undisclosed but they will be in addition to at least $20,000 in repair fees for her car.

A spokesman for the city Law Department said Wednesday that while they have not yet recieved the suit papers, once they do, city attorneys will be closely reading and responding to them.

NYPD patrol officer dies after month-long struggle

Posted on May 6th, 2010 No Comments

According to medical personnel, Andrew Sipp, a 45-year-old NYPD veteran, died this Tuesday of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident a month ago.

The officer, a member of the New York Police Department’s Highway Patrol, was driving to work early April 4 on the Bronx River Parkway when the accident occurred. He was forced to swerve violently on his motorcycle to avoid a two-vehicle collision directly in front of him, throwing him from the bike.

Severe head injuries sustained in the crash forced Jacobi Medical Center doctors to place Sipp in a medically induced coma to save his life. Tuesday, 31 days after the accident, Sipp finally succumbed to his wounds.

He leaves behind a 9-year-old daughter and wife. His daughter has cystic fibrosis, and Sipp and his wife spent much of their time raising money for the Greater New York chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and spreading awareness about the disease.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Andrew Sipp.
