NHTSA creates rule to require seat belts in buses

Posted on September 1st, 2010 No Comments

Last month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a new rule that will require certain buses to have seat belts in every seat.  The regulation includes buses that weigh more than 26,00 pounds, have at least 16 passenger seats, and have at least two rows of forward-facing seats behind the driver.

The rule does not include large school buses and urban transit buses.  NHTSA officials said the reason for this was that accidents are less frequent in city buses and large school buses.  Moreover, they fear that if large school buses required seat belts, the cost could decrease the number of school buses and as a result, increase the number of students without a safe way of getting to school.

The NHTSA believes that the new rule will prevent 144 to 749 injuries a year and could possibly save up to 8 lives.  ”Seat belts save lives, and putting them in motorcoaches just makes sense,” stated NHTSA Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.
